Wishing a very special happy birthday to Hugo França, one of our #VanBiennaleAlumni and the creator of the PUBLIC FURNITURE URBAN TREES public art installations in our 2014 - 2016 exhibition. 🎂🎉. You can find them on Spanish Banks in Vancouver and in Squamish.

First installed in New Westminster, Vancouver, and Squamish, PUBLIC FURNITURE URBAN TREES offered a groundbreaking proposal for sustainable design and community engagement. Hugo França researched and developed materials and techniques to transform salvaged fallen trees into objects, sculptures, and furniture. This was the first time in his 20-plus-year international career that he created public sculpture outside Brazil using a variety of local West Coast fallen trees, which made this a truly unique #VanBiennale project and experience for the Brazilian artist.

So many “blue” memories this weekend as we mar

So many “blue” memories this weekend as we mark the 5th anniversary since the start of THE BLUE TREES project (2015) in New Westminster, British Columbia by #VanBiennale alumnus @kondimopoulos.

Using blue, environmentally-safe pigment to cover 31 trees in the New Westminster location, Dimopoulos aimed to bring environmental consciousness and social action together through community participation. The project continued in Squamish and at Simon’s department store at Park Royal Shopping Centre in West Vancouver. The blue color was a means of altering perception, an eye-catching stimulant used to raise social consciousness about the role of trees as the lungs of the world, as trees are largely invisible in our busy daily lives.

THE BLUE TREES is a Vancouver Biennale initiative launched during the 2009 – 2011 exhibition that has gone on to become an international, award-winning public-art installation created in over 14 cities across the world.

Last Chance! -- our THREADS THROUGH TIME project is closing today at The ACT Art Gallery in Maple Ridge.

THREADS THROUGH TIME is phase 2 of the Vancouver Biennale's WEAVING CULTURAL IDENTITIES project, an exploration that brings together Indigenous and Islamic communities in a collaborative exploration of weaving traditions and histories. We are thrilled to have been able to show these weavings in BC again, so if you didn't get a chance to see them in person in 2019, today is your last day to see it at ACT Art Gallery in Maple Ridge!
