Carlos Martiel has developed a series of three performances during the 6-week Residency, each confronting the ongoing perpetuation of colonial violence in Canada against the Indigenous people. Using the body as a site and a source, the first two performances takes on: the colour of the Canadian flag (Under Occupation), and the limitations of the Indian Act (Statute). The subject of the third performance, Agony, will be the effect of Canada’s Residential School System, and it will be realized when Martiel returns to Vancouver later this year.
