Statement

Beginning with the idea of creating a column in homage to women basket weavers, we found it compelling to document our perspectives and experiences in Vancouver through printmaking.

This basket column, created on drawn fabrics, contains representations of images from our walks through the city. It serves as another means of affirming our presence and time in Vancouver:

We are here / Nosotros estamos acá / Nous sommes ici

The design emerged from investigating the morphology of different basket forms, using donated fabrics, graphite drawings, and fabric appliqués that reference patterns found in Indigenous textiles, traditional quilt designs, Gee’s Bend quilts, and modernist painting.

We selected two basket models for our sampler, which contain representations of our daily life in Vancouver.

The sampler fabric was created in collaboration with Emily Carr University of Art + Design Material Matters Lab.
