Hold That Thought

Kelly Mark, Canada

Description

Hold that Thought, a neon work with programmed failure units
by Toronto-based multimedia artist Kelly Mark, was exhibited in the 2009 – 2011 Vancouver Biennale exhibition.

This site-specific work was first exhibited in Toronto’s Nuit Blanche Festival in 2006 where it was installed on the front façade of the Church of the Redeemer at Bloor and Avenue Road in the city’s downtown district. Several of the letters were programmed to fail or sputter (flicker on and off) at random intervals.

During its installation on the façade of the Sunset Community Centre in Vancouver (located on Main Street near East 49th Avenue), the artwork encouraged passersby to stop, slow down their minds, think and “hold that thought,” even if for only
a moment out of their busy day. The temporal nature of this fleeting moment became a unique and personal experience for each viewer.
