Biennale brings artist Vik Muniz to Squamish for big project
On Monday, July 21, Muniz came to Squamish to create a new conceptual public artwork as part of the Vancouver Biennale. The piece is being constructed along the Mamquam Blind Channel downtown, and Muniz hopes the public will take part in its creation.

Renowned artist bursts into B.C. on a grand scale
Brazilian-born, New York City-based artist Vik Muniz isn’t afraid of bold new adventures. Muniz, 52, began his artistic career as a sculptor but moved on to photographic representations of his work, building finely detailed mosaics from quotidian materials like chocolate, sugar and junkyard rubbish and then photographing them. Driven to explore different mediums, he has been at the heart of two documentary films, including the Academy Award-nominated Waste Land, which chronicles Muniz’s work at a Brazilian junkyard located in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

Giant new public art unveiled on Vancouver’s False Creek
Olympic Village in Vancouver has some colourful new residents. A brand new seven-metre-tall outdoor sculpture has been installed on the edge of Olympic Village at Hinge Park. Called Human Structures, the sculpture consists of 64 brightly coloured metal cutouts in the shape of human figures, stacked one on top of the other.

Brazilian-born artist Vik Muniz is probably best known here for the Academy Award-nominated documentary Wasteland, in which he worked with garbage pickers at Rio de Janeiro's sprawling landfill to create giant, mosaic-like portraits out of trash. It was both a devastating look at the poverty-stricken people who live at the dump, and a revelation of the transformative power of art. Now the international art star with a passionate social conscience is set to come to B.C. to create another of his massive, mosaic-like pieces.

Ivan Eyre “Bird Wrap” installed in Vancouver

Jonathan Borofsky celebrates human connection at the Vancouver Biennale
NO SOONER HAD Jonathan Borofsky’s new public artwork arisen on the False Creek seawall than kids were taking pictures of it with their parents’ cellphones and cyclists were stopping to shout out “I love your piece!”. The veteran artist’s 24-foot-tall vision of interlocking, multicoloured figures linking and lifting each other is easy to like and hard to miss. The new work for the Vancouver Biennale is a bright, positive statement about people supporting each other.

Installation of “Walking Figures” in North Vancouver

Coriander art in hill hamlet
Wangdi Sherpa, a 33-year-old artist from Rampuria who is now based in Vadodara, Gujarat, has started the unique project in the village where farmers were encouraged to participate in the “I have a dream,” project, which in Nepali translates to “Mero euta sapana cha.”
Sherpa encouraged the farmers to grow coriander, which when fully grown has turned into a relief work, its design spelling out the words “Mero euta sapana cha.”

‘I have a dream will highlight farmers’ problems’
City artist Shweta Bhattad takes her art away from the confines of a studio to connect with the community. Through art residencies in India and abroad she has always picked up social issues. Food, women empowerment, saving the girl child and more recently problems in rural areas are some themes she has highlighted during these events. An invitation to be a part of the prestigious art residency, Biennale 2014-2016 to be held at Vancouver in Canada has spurred her to take farmer issues to an international platform.
