I’m an AP art student in grade 12 at Sentinel Secondary, completing my drawing portfolio this year. Yue Minjun’s sculpture portrays figures in various stages of hysterical laughter. My piece, a self-portrait, attempts to depict the same expression, but also to express the various emotions associated with laughter. Laughter is usually only associated with happiness and positive feelings, but I have tried to represent the other, less positive emotions that can involve laughter. There can be laughter out of exasperation, disbelief and denial-among countless others–and I think these feelings show through the laughter on my faces.
